Application of Power Amplifiers Driven by Ultrasonic Motors in Magnetically Anchored Laparoscopic Systems
[Overview]
In this study, a power amplifier was used to build an experimental platform for frequency-response curve testing. Two types of ultrasonic motors—rotary and linear—were designed and tested. Through stator modal testing, mechanical output characteristic experiments, and system integration, it was verified that the developed motors meet the key requirements for laparoscopic driving, including torque, thrust, and resolution, confirming their feasibility as direct drive sources for magnetically anchored laparoscopic instruments.
Experiment Name: Output Characteristics and System Integration Experiment of Rotary and Linear Ultrasonic Motors for Magnetically Anchored Laparoscopic Applications
Experiment Objective: This study aims to verify the performance of two designed ultrasonic motors (rotary and linear) as direct drive sources for magnetically anchored laparoscopic instruments through stator modal simulation, harmonic response analysis, and prototype output characteristic testing. Key performance indicators include torque, thrust, and motion resolution. Finally, an integrated system is built to verify the feasibility of their application in single-port laparoscopic surgery.
Test Equipment: Laser vibrometer, signal generator, power amplifier, infrared non-contact measuring instrument, laser displacement sensor, load test platform, and a magnetically anchored laparoscopic camera system platform integrating a magnetic anchoring module, laparoscopic robot, and control system.
Experiment Procedure: First, COMSOL software was used for simulation to determine the stator operating modes, which were verified through sweep-frequency experiments using a laser vibrometer. Subsequently, a test platform was built to measure key characteristic curves of the rotary and linear ultrasonic motors under specific voltages and preloads, including frequency–speed, speed–torque, and speed–load curves. Data such as maximum torque (0.51 mN·m) and maximum thrust (107.8 mN) were obtained. Finally, the motors were integrated into the magnetically anchored laparoscopic system, and their motion resolution was tested (rotary: 5.5 mrad; linear: 24 μm), comprehensively verifying their performance as drive sources.

Experiment Results: The magnetically anchored laparoscopic driving scheme based on ultrasonic motors can achieve high-precision motion control. The rotary ultrasonic motor, at a driving voltage of Upp = 100 V, delivers a maximum output torque of 0.51 mN·m and a minimum motion resolution of 5.5 mrad. The linear ultrasonic motor, at a driving voltage of Upp = 200 V, delivers a maximum thrust of 107.8 mN and a minimum displacement resolution of 24 μm. The output performance of both motors meets the preset driving requirements, and they have been successfully integrated into the magnetically anchored laparoscopic system, verifying their feasibility as direct drive sources for laparoscopes.
